Under Milk Wood

Dylan Thomas’ UNDER MILK WOOD.
 Jazz score by James Russell

This production grew out of a passion for Dylan Thomas’ wonderful ‘Play for Voices’ and  Stan Tracey’s 1960’s recording inspired by Under Milk Wood.

It was decided to try and perform the complete script underscored by jazz.
The result was a wonderful blend of music and poetry. Many of the longer passages in the play were subtly backed by new jazz compositions by James Russell performed by a jazz quintet with individual numbers being played to emphasise points in the script.

Originally performed with eleven actors and a jazz quintet all playing live on stage the production was later revised and played with seven actors. The style was that of a 1950’s live BBC recording blended with the atmosphere of a Soho Jazz club. All locations which Thomas himself would have been familiar with.

We have in mind to revise the piece with an even smaller cast  at the same time retaining the quintet.

First performed at Live Theatre in Newcastle in Sept. 02, a planed tour for 2003 had to be postponed  as the Welsh Theatre had obtained exclusive performance rights for that year.(The 50th anniversary of Dylan’s untimely death in New York)
Our version toured with much acclaim in 2005.

We would love to revise this production if anyone would like to book it, especially for a festival performance.
